— Golfers were doing more than just driving towards the pin on Aug. 9, they were hoping to change what you see when driving into their community.

Mitch, John and Philip McComb are the driving force behind the massive signs -- at least 18 feet wide and 15 to 20 feet high -- they hope to place here along the road when going into Wellington.

Instead of just honoring two winners -- the 2001 and 2002 Class 4A State Football Champions -- they want the names of all 25 teams and 79 individuals who have won state titles for the high school to be listed.

Big signs like that don't come cheap. That's why the McComb's put together a fundraising golf/sports tournament, combining all the sports their big sign would honor.

All the swinging is driving at more than the sign.

The brothers also want to set up a scholarship, encouraging students to continue the tradition the men are working to honor.

"That's the whole idea because if you keep kids involved in athletics and activities and doing things they stay out of trouble," one brother said.

The McCombs raised a few thousand dollars, enough to get their idea looking more like a reality.

They hope to make the tournament an annual event to raise money for the scholarship that will accompany the sign.
