"The foundation has been laid, I want the community to understand that we've made an investment here," said Sandra Lassiter, who's fighting to purchase Sumner School.
Sandra Lassiter is continuing her goal with Community First to buy Sumner School and restore this National historical site.
Community members, even firefighters volunteered their time to help clean up the outside of the school.
"We want to show this community that we have come together to restore a legacy," said Lassiter.
July first, the City council voted unanimously to give Community First 60 days to find the money to buy Sumner, and Sandra says its going to make it happen.
"And now we will have our monies to buy the building, and if everybody would send their pledges in we'll have the monies for insurance, we will have the monies to put in our alarm system," said Lassiter.
And the money is still coming in, Community First received a check for 1,000 dollars today.
Lassiter says the money collected is going to pay bills and contractors to make this vision come true. "We've spent over 35 thousand dollars, we secured and paid our bills, and they have been paid towards this project.," said Lassiter.
And she hopes the city will work with them. "If the city works with us, which I hope they would, they would see that we've do diligence to this," said Lassiter.
Community First will be back in front city council in about three weeks.
The group will present its work, and hopes to get an answer on buying Sumner School.
