Hayden: Eyeing a state title in 2008

This preseason could be one of the most important for Hayden in quite sometime.
The Wildcats have six returning starters on both sides of the ball, not to mention 26 seniors on this year's team. And those numbers, when we are talking football, usually means great things like a possible state title.
"Oh yeah, that's always a goal for everybody, a state championship. I think we work for it and we want it as bad as everyone else does," said Hayden running back Elliot Konrade.
"We have goals obviously. Every year we want to win league, we want to win our district and we want to win a state championship just like every other year's team. The only hard part is getting it done," said senior defensive tackle Cole McVay.
And to get it done, the Wildcats will have to forget about two very disappointing games from last year.
They only lost twice the whole season and both were by single point; a 36-35 loss to Centennial champ Junction City and a playoff heartbreaker to Andale.
And the Cats are using those games as motivation for this year's campaign.
"We have kind of drilled the point to the kids that we had two one-point losses last year. Sure it's going to be a sour taste in your mouth. We're anxious to get things started this year," said second year head coach Bill Arnold.
"I think we are trying to all take it out of the back of our head and start over fresh this season. We have a bunch of returning starters. I think we are looking forward to the start of the season and hopefully it will be a good year," said Konrade.
"I think we have a pretty good shot this year to go pretty far and we did pretty well last year and we don't expect anything different this year," said McVay.
Hayden will begin their quest for their first state title since 2004 when they travel to take on League foe Shawnee Heights in Topeka.
The high school football season will kick off across the state on September 5.
