Kansas City Police fatally shoot man who fired at vehicles

A man went on a shooting rampage in a popular Kansas City park minutes after he wrecked his car there.

The 52-year-old, whose name is not being released at this time, lost control of his vehicle, drove through Swope Park, struck a tree and began shooting at passing vehicles with a rifle," Police Capt. Rich Lockhart said.

An off-duty officer who saw the man walking with a rifle got out of her car and approached the man. She ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he refused and kept walking, then started firing at passing vehicles.

Three officers approached the man and ordered him to surrender, but he pointed his gun at them, Lockhart said. The officers shot the man, hitting him several times. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Police say the man hit at least three vehicles with gunfire.
