Governor signs bill expanding military benefits

More benefits are coming to the military.
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius today signed a bill that improves benefits to military members and expands the National Guard Museum, 6700 SW Topeka Blvd.

The bill gives more money to state employees who are on full-time military duty. It also allows full-time military service members who have been or will be deployed to defer all or part of their property tax for up to two years.
It also provides no-cost hunting and fishing licenses to disabled veterans, funding for National Guard Scholarships and funding for the Kansas Veterans Home, Kansas Soldiers Home and Veterans Cemetery System.
The bill also amended existing law to fund the expansion of the Kansas National Guard through lottery tickets sales, which is expected to collect $450,000 annually for fiscal year 2009 and 2010. The expansion will include a 35th Infantry Division Museum and an education center.

HB 2923 was originally signed into law May 14 and became effective July 1.
