Let's Help, KTKA encourage community to keep giving

Agency sees an upward trend in need; volunteers sought

The Community Keeps Giving project has married Let's Help and KTKA 49 ABC News for a commitment of community betterment.

Over the course of the last six months, we've partnered to transform five people's homes and lives in what started as the Oprah's Big Give challenge. The challenge ended, but the community kept giving, restoring a woman's inherited home, providing a Scranton man who is disabled with a new handicap accessible van and the list goes on.

  • Cost: Free

Full event details

This weekend comes the culmination of the project, a special broadcast starting at 6 p.m. Sunday and highlighting the five families and the efforts of individuals and companies around the area. Plus, a telethon will be held in conjunction with the broadcast.

KTKA will host a telethon to support Let's Help. Community members interested in giving time or money are asked to call in to the station from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Proceeds will be pumped right back into the Topeka community. Write this phone number down: (785)215-8500, and call in Sunday night.

Karen Taylor with Let's Help says the need has been increasing in recent months, so volunteers are especially needed.

Let's Help offers a variety of services to the community including free lunches to the homeless and hungry, GED assistance, a food commodity program and emergency services. Funding the emergency services is particularly valuable to those people who find themselves in need of help with their utility bills, grocery bills and, in some cases, rent. The nonprofit organization also offers training for older citizens (55 and older) and job placement assistance.

The stories below feature the five participants in the Community Keeps Giving Challenge.
