The best deal on mulch in the city!

Mulch...If you garden, then you know all about it. If you planted flowers for the first time this year, you probably need it.

Adam Moser, Director of Topeka Yard Materials Recycling Facility, says mulch is extremely important to incorporate into your garden, or landscaping project.

"All mulch is good because it helps to retain moisture in the soil, reduces watering. It also helps ease fluctuations in temperatures of the soil," said Moser.

And during hot, dry Kansas summers, retaining any soil moisture is a must. But where is the best place to get mulch?

Most people go to Wal-Mart, Home Depot or their local landscaping service to get mulch in bags. It will likely cost anywhere from $2 to as much as $5 for a bag. Each bag will likely only cover two or three cubic feet. So a big landscaping project could cost hundreds of dollars to cover with a few inches of mulch. Adam says you don't have to spend that much if you go through the city.

"A compact truck is usually under four-by-eight feet, and that is a $10 load. We will load it about as full and heaping as we can get it," said Moser.

Better yet, Adam tells us an even bigger difference between store-bought mulch and city mulch...

"This is recycled. You never know what you are getting in a bag. It's probably some guy cutting down a forest. It's all business to him," said Moser."

So buying mulch from the city really gives you the bang for your buck. Not only are you saving a lot of money to enrich your garden or flower bed, but you are also putting a little bit of Topeka right back where it came from.

City mulch is available at the intersection of I-70 and MacVicar. Office hours are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. through noon, and from 1 p.m. through 4:45 p.m. You can call 785-368-3762 to schedule a mulch pick-up or limb drop-off.
