"We do backboarding, CPR, drowning and first aid," auatic supervisor Lori Madaus said.
The wet and wild Lifeguard Games gives life savers a chance to show off their aquatic abilities.
"It's what we do everyday except we get medals for it," KU student Jonathan Miller said.
"I grew up in Texas, near water, I like being outside," KU student Erica Nutt said.
The Lawrence Parks and Rec team plays host to the games for a second time.
"Fun event and good for Lawrence because of the central location and a good facility," Madaus said.
The home team had some success last year...
"I got second for submerged rescue and we won backboarding as a team," Miller said.
...And they're looking to blow the other teams out of the water.
"I'm going for the gold and I think I got it," Miller said.
"We did really well, worked as a team with good communication," Nutt said.
Enjoying the pool is key to donning the red swimsuits.
"It's not that hard, but you have be comfortable in the water and swim. 30 hour class where they learn everything," Madaus said.
But the best part about the job?
"Working with people and getting to be outside and near the water," Nutt said.
"The tan!" Miller said.
The overall winning team was Blue Valley.
Lawrence Parks and Rec placed first in shallow backboarding, CPR and first aid.
And Miller missed the gold in passive rescue by just seven hundreths of second.
