Tigers 19, Royals 4
The Royals' stranglehold on the Tigers has been loosened.
After winning all six previous games against Detroit this season, Kansas City suffered a 19-4 meltdown on a 97-degree Monday night as 14,137 fans watched at Kauffman Stadium. The Tigers scored 10 runs in the eighth inning.
Miguel Cabrera had five hits and six RBIs for the Tigers. Matt Joyce had five RBIs on four hits, including a three-run homer.
Zach Miner, a reliever all season for Detroit, made his first start since May 17, 2007. He gave the Tigers six shutout innings, giving up just three singles and one walk.
Royals right-hander Luke Hochevar, who shut out the Tigers for six innings of a 2-0 win on May 14, was no puzzle this time.
Detroit drilled him for five runs in the third inning, loudly capped by Joyce's three-run blast to left field. Cabrera, who had an RBI single in the third, also belted a two-run double in the fifth. That was Hochevar's last inning.
Gary Sheffield socked a three-run homer and Jimmy Gobble had to be relieved after facing 12 batters and getting just two outs in the double-digit eighth.
