49 Sports Challenge: Carried away with corn
7:41 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2008
Leonard Kelly has been playing corn toss for about three years. A family member from the Bluegrass State introduced the 69-year-old to the sport.
"My nephew from Kentucky, he brought it back when he came to visit us, and he wanted me to try it out," Leonard said. "And, he just beat me bad. So then, I had to start playing a little bit. I made a couple of sets and made my own bags and everything, and I've got where I can compete with him now even beat him."
Leonard knows to toss the corn accurately its all about the form.
"You got to have a touch for this," he said. "And, some people got it and some don't, and I just felt like I could just about compete with anybody."
Even Leonard's wife, Norma, supports his corn toss habits.
"He has quite a time with it they really get carried away sometimes. They have a lot of fun," Norma said.
Now, for the rules of this challenge.
"It's thirty feet from our foul line to the hole, and if you get one in the hole, it's three points," he said. "And, if you get it on the board, it's one. And, you subtract the difference between your opponent, and that's how you get your points for 21, and you go to 21."
Before the competition began, Leonard's grandson, Jordan Seidel, tried to psych out 49 Sports Reporter Dave DeCandis.

"Do I stand any chance against Leonard?" Dave asked.
"No," Jordan said.
"Why not?"
"He's good."
Leonard got off to a hot start sinking his first shot, and Dave missed. At halftime, Leonard led 15-0.
"Do I stand any chance of coming back?" Dave asked.
"Well, I don't know I could turn the other way and not do any good at all," Leonard said.
Unfortunately for Dave, Leonard kept up his hot hand scoring points after points.
"Leonard I got smoked I lost 21 to 0, but how did I do?" Dave asked.
"Well, you got good form. You need to practice on the rotation of the corn bag, but other than that I think you can do alright," Leonard said.
