This week the federal government said the bears must be protected because of a decline in Arctic sea ice from global warming. 49 Photojournalist Justin Schmidt went to the Topeka Zoo to find out why there's no need to worry about bears here in Kansas. Watch his video essay above.
Polar bears are the first species affected by global warming to be protected by the Endangered Species Act.
