Church hopes to nourish community with Ethnic Food Festival

A Topeka church will be serving up ethnic food and fellowship this weekend.

Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Christian Church is hosting its 4th annual Ethnic Food Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11.

All community members are invited to stop by 2516 SW Huntoon for reasonably priced, traditional, savory foods from the Mediterranean, including baklava, a traditional Middle Eastern dessert.

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Where: St. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, 2516 SW Huntoon St., Topeka
  • Cost: $15
  • Age limit: All ages

“There’s quite a few others, but this is the one everyone thinks of,” church representative John Weber said.

Church members will also be frying up ethnic donuts and smothering them with honey.

Weber says the festival is not so much about raising money as it is raising awareness of the culture of Orthodox Christians and Eastern Christians.

“The primary purpose and benefit is to get people introduced to our church," he said.

Orthodox Christianity is fairly uncommon in the Midwest, he said.

All the proceeds go towards church activities.
