Plethora of the big summer movies is or soon will be out on DVD just in time for the holiday shopping season.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is one such film hoping to capitalize off of Christmas.

In this fourth installment of the series, Jones faces off against a group of ruthless Russians who’ve taken over a top-secret military base. They are after a box containing the remains of an alien life form discovered in Roswell, N.M. They want to harness the power of the aliens to give Russia ultimate power over the world.

Many Indiana Jones fans thought the supernatural element was controversial.

“When I saw the screening, I was like ‘oh my god’ ‘cause George Lucas wrote it, and he, you know, has kind of lost his passion and I think a lot of his talent, by the way, as far as scriptwriting,” Film Critic Keith Van Sickle said. “And what happened was, he did a movie that could have been really silly, but it actually wasn’t. It was fun.”

Much of the audience accepted the far-fetched plot lines and appreciated the studio bringing Jones back after a 20-year hiatus.

“We welcome back a legend, an old friend, somebody who we’ve been wanting to see for 20 years, and it kinda offset any of the negatives,” he said.

Van Sickle recommends the wide-screen version so audiences can see the entire picture Steven Spielberg had intended for the audience.

The two-disc DVD contains a 12-part making-of documentary, among other extras. The double disc sells for about $20. Or, you can purchase all four films in the series in a box set for $89.99.

Among the other films to make it to DVD in time for the holiday shopping season: “The Simpsons Movie,” which Van Sickle also recommends.
