The Topeka Community Roundtable discussed mental health this week. Karla Biber and Ann Parrott-Anderson from the HOPE Connection at Valeo were the keynote speakers. Listen in as the roundtable discusses different levels of mental illness and the issue of homelessness. These two women travel around Topeka meeting homeless people. Learn why they say, for some people, homelessness is a preferred way of life.

Michelle Montgomery, program specialist with the Kansas Department of Corrections, leads the discussion on the importance of mentoring in reducing crime and especially in reducing habitual offenses. The Topeka Community Roundtable is held to connect service organizations that deal with some riskier community members, those who are returning to the community after incarceration. It takes everyone to help reduce the risk of offenders re-offending. Montgomery discusses some of the data studies have dug up and introduces you to a Re-entry Program alumni and her mentor, both of whom speak.

The first Topeka Roundtable on re-entry and recidivism was hosted by the Department of Corrections February 15 at the Central Park Christian Church. Corrections spokeswomen, faith-based organizations, community members and former inmates joined together for this discussion. The Department of Corrections presented research on re-entry and recidivism, which is the first 40 minutes of this podcast. Three community members -- Theresa Carter, Latina Pittman and David Proffitt -- give their first-hand experience of returning to the community after incarceration in the last 30 minutes.
